I know because I lived on the wrong side of it for years.

When I was young, a series of dental procedures left my bite permanently altered. My jaw didn't close the way it should have. My brain, trying to compensate, began to favor one side of my body over the other β€” in how I chewed, how I spoke, how I held tension, how I moved through the world. It worked for a while. Until it didn't.

By my late 20s and into my early 30s, what had been a slow creep became a full collapse. I woke up one morning and couldn't reach my phone. I couldn't get out of bed. Shmuel Ben Yeshayahu β€” previouslyΒ known to his community as Fede β€” is the founder of Hope for Dystonia and the creator of the Self-Healers Academy, the most comprehensive nervous system recovery program for dystonia in the world.

His path to this work did not begin in a classroom. It began in his own body.

As a child, a series of poorly executed dental procedures altered the structure of his jaw, leaving his bite permanently asymmetrical. His brain did what brains do β€” it adapted. It learned to favor one side for chewing, speaking, holding tension, and finding stability. For years, the compensation held. Then, layered on top of a deeper history of developmental dysregulation absorbed from a family environment that required him to constantly self-regulate in order to survive, the pattern began to accelerate.
